Veterans Day ceremonies planned in Torrington, Winsted

The Register Citizen - 11/9/2021

Nov. 7—TORRINGTON — Multiple events are being held in the area to mark Veterans Day this year, honoring the men and women who have served this country.

The newly established Torrington Veterans Memorial Committee is holding a ceremony at 10:45 a.m.. Nov. 11 at Coe Memoral Park. The public, enlisted military personnel and all veterans are invited. The committee will commemorate the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, in 1918, 103 years ago. The final honors squad will perform a rifle salute, followed by the playing of taps. In the event of rain, the event will be held inside the civic center.

If anyone has an American flag that is torn, faded or otherwise damaged, they may bring it to the ceremony and a member of a veterans organization will take the flag and see that it is properly retired.

For information, contact the Torrington Veterans Memorial Committee at vetactcom@yahoo.com.

Winsted is also holding an observance that day at 2 p.m. at the Soldier's Monument on Crown Street.

The public is invited "for a moment of reflection on the anniversary of the armistice ending World War I," according to a statement. The event will have a special Soldiers' Monument Commission ceremony, and a reading of the Gettysburg Address, first presented by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

The monument will be open to visitors until 4 p.m. Thursday. No access is allowed on the second and third floors this year because of continuing renovations and open-window areas of the building. The monument is 131 years old, and the commission is in the process of installing windows in the building.

In Harwinton, American Legion Post 137 is holding a ceremony at 11 a.m. on the Green at South Road and Route 4.

A guest speaker has been invited. The post is honoring all Harwinton veterans who died during the last year.

A reception follows the ceremony in the community hall next to the Green. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in Harwinton Town Hall, 100 Bentley Drive. For information, call Gary Schaff 860-485-1166.
