Marion County Board of Supervisors approve bid for Veterans Affairs campus demolition

The Oskaloosa Herald - 4/30/2021

Apr. 29—KNOXVILLE — The Marion County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a bid changing the Veterans Affairs campus into an urban renewal area during their Tuesday morning meeting.

The demolition contract was given to Veit & Company based in Rogers, Minnesota. The bid came out around $6.6 million, which is lower than what the supervisors expected.

Interim City Manager Heather Ussery said they'll start working through their 28E agreement with their attorneys.

Discussion over what to do with the Veterans Affairs campus has been going on for over a year. In January of 2020, the City of Knoxville announced they would revamp the Veterans Administration Campus, officially naming it the Veterans District.

Recently, the Knoxville community gathered to honor the decommission of the Veterans Affairs Chapel, which was included in the Oskaloosa Herald on Tuesday.

"We've made a commitment to this area, with a lot with everything we have, and for these folks to make the decisions they're making, knowing what the impact will be, takes a tremendous amount of courage," Marion County Supervisor Mark Raymie said during the ceremony.

The Marion County Board of Supervisors will start issuance of bonds during their next meeting. Demolition for the buildings on campus is expected to begin this upcoming summer.
