---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of ruler that will allow individuals with low vision to read smaller units of measurements such as centimeters and millimeters on the ruler. The New Rule has larger numbers on higher contrast measurement bars. A sliding pointer runs along the center of the ruler, displaying the millimeter measurement as numbers, again on a high contrast background, on a wheel inside the pointer's housing. An arm inside the slider rests against the track and clicks each time it passes over a tooth in the track giving tactile and audible feedback as the pointer passes each millimeter (the designer states that the track would need more teeth than the prototyped version to account for every millimeter). The New Rule's second innovation that is one of the ruler's edges folds over on a hinge. With the side folded down, an object can be more accurately measured. This was intended to make it easier for individuals with low vision to measure marks on paper as well as objects. TITLE: No Ordinary Ruler. WEBSITE: Yanko Design.
