Earl is a voice input, voice output and screen reader program designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This application (or app) is powered by iSpeech, allowing a person to use his or her voice to turn an Apple iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into a reading machine with voice output. The user launches the app, double taps the screen, speaks commands into the device's built-in microphone and Earl will read selected articles from over 250 newspapers, magazines and websites from around the world. The app also allows the user to customize his or her list of newspapers, magazines and websites. Earl's voice commands include: stop and start reading, read again, move up or move down by paragraph, and skip ahead to the next article in the section. The user can jump quickly between screens by double-tapping and saying "Newspapers," "Sections" or "Articles." Earl features an adjustable speech rate and five available male and female reading voices, and the user can save his or her settings saved to iCloud. The user is allowed to read up to three articles per day. OPTIONS: Available as an in-app purchase, the user can subscribe to a $9.99 monthly plan or $99.99 annual plan that provides unlimited access to articles. COMPATIBILITY: For use with the Apple iPhone (3GS or higher), iPod Touch (fifth generation or higher), or iPad. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Apple iOS 5.0 or later.
