Gifts sought for Wilson mental health clients

Wilson Daily Times - 12/20/2016

Dec. 20--The Mental Health Association is still accepting items for its annual Operation Santa Claus.

The program provides Christmas gifts to the mentally ill in Wilson who live in group homes, apartments and hospitals.

According to Executive Director Janelle Clevinger, accepted donations include lightweight jackets, pants, shirts, socks, sweaters, pajamas, slippers, hairbrushes, combs, lotion, facial cream, nail polish, lipstick, shampoo and conditioner, perfume, stationery, stamps, puzzles and books.

Monetary donations are also accepted as MHA-Wilson staff and volunteers shop for items not donated by the public.

Last year, the Mental Health Association received $1,174 worth of items and $1,835 in monetary donations.

Clevinger said donations in both categories are down this year.

"For some, these might be the only holiday gifts they receive," she said.

The deadline for items to be dropped off for Christmas is Thursday, although Clevinger said items dropped off after deadline will still make it to the hospitals after Christmas.

For information, call the Mental Health Association at 252-243-2773.

The Mental Health Association in Wilson County is a United Way of Wilson agency.
